All the current AK's you see advertised have to be from kits, as complete rifles, receivers, & barrels are no longer importable. They will have enough US-made parts to meet the 922r requirements.

CIA seems to have solved the problem of ragged magazine holes & canted front sights. The contractors that they now use are doing a really nice job. Of course, there will be slight differences in every batch, especially with wood/polymer.

I sold this CIA M70B1 last week, & quality is exceptional:

Their current parts kits come from the Zastava factory in Serbia.

There are two kinds of "new" AKs for commercial sale now. As you say, some are made from chopped up old guns (ie "kits") reassembled onto American made receivers with American made barrels and enough other 922a compliant parts to make them legal. All the CAI guns fall into this category.

The second kind are guns built on legally imported new manufacture "sporting" configuration Saiga rifles that are then converted to AK format, adding 922A parts. The more "boutique" makers usually go this route, and since all the guns parts are brand new, this potentially leads to better, though more expensive, guns.

Not sure that CAI has improved its work force so much as that changes in the marketplace have caused the problems to go away.

I think the canted sight issue in particular wasn't CAI's building per se, but rather that the Romanian WASR kits they were building on came out of the bags/factory with canted sights that CAI simply never bothered to correct. This wasn't ever so much of an issue with non Romanian AK pattern guns.

Mag wobble was mostly from reaming out the mag areas from legally importable WASR single stack guns to accept double-stack magazines. Building on properly made American made receivers designed from the ground up to take double stack mags makes this one go away.

We are still getting complete sporting rifles with foreign made barrels pressed into foreign made receivers from overseas.

Yes foreign made AK (barrels only) have been banned back door by the ATF. The ATF has not banned complete foreign rifles with complete foreign barrels and foreign receivers.

US parts (Gas Piston, Fire Control Groups, and Muzzle Brakes) are added and magazine wells are opened to them to bring to compliance with 922R (1968 Gun Control Act).

Canted barrels can occur on all press fit barrels in stamped AK rifles.

Regarding the Yugo Pap rifles. I put them below a Romanian Wasr10 in quality. Their lack of a Chrome lined barrels being one issue. Their lack of a receiver mounted scope mount being issue number 2.

    Problems with the N-Pap:

    Problems with the O-Pap:
