Pre 64 Win. 32 spl. assembly
My 64 Winchester lever was extremely rough and I was advised to try cleaning it to see if that helped. I am 66 years old and have torn down and reassembled more guns than I can count. I used two books that show the exploded view and a couple of articles online. The gun came apart easy enough and I ran all the smaller parts through my sonic cleaner. They came out looking great. I then rinsed them off, dry them very well and oiled them up individually before starting the reassembly.I followed each step exactly and the gun went back together easily When it was all back together I tried to work the lever and it only moves about an inch and locks up. I tried cocking the hammer and it works fine by hand. After a few choice words I looked over the rifle and thought I would remove the Finger Lever Pin Stop Screw to see if that would make a difference in working the lever. With that pin removed the bolt and lever worked correctly. I again installed that pin and the lever would not work. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this problem besides taking it to a gun smith. Something I possibly missed? I am not in any hurry. I left the rifle assembled and set it in the safe until I decide to work on it again. I have found over the years that walking away and waiting a while sometimes makes things a lot easier.
Thanks for any help.

sounds like you mixed up that screw with another one . 0 -
When the gun was disassembled each part was laid out in order. That particular screw is very short and I don't think it will fit any other hole on the gun.

I did that once.
All parts went together fine but
the rifle wouldn't function.
Took me a week to sort it out.0 -
Gene,
Your screw should look like this one:

Sometimes, the original screw is lost, when the owners puts on a sidemount, for a scope. When the sidemount is removed, the longer sidemount screw is sometimes stuck back in the lever pin hole, and you get what is happening to you. Here is the longer, sidemount screw, though some do not have the extened threads:

Also, you may have to file down the tip of your current stop screw, to shorten it, if your screw is not a longer, sidemount screw.

This rifle has never had a scope mounted. It has all original screws but thanks for the input. 0
