Wood finish on early Winchester 9422?
I found a Winchester Model 9422 magnum at a gunshow today. The serial number shows a 1975 model. The finish is glossy and I suspect a varnish job, because my 1972 and 1973 rifles have a less-glossy finish. Am I correct that shiny wasn't original? I don't want to soften the finish without confirming. The metal on the gun is mint. Thanks for advice on the wood.[:)]

You're correct. The glossy finish was on the later XTR models. 0 -
Marshal,
When doing older Winchester stocks to make them look original, I use 50-50 boiled linseed oil and turpentine. The old adage about using this mixture is, once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month for a year.
I use it a lot to tough up older finish's, brings life back to the wood.

Tung oil and turps is good as well. Less likely to darken with time. 0
