Winchester 1873 38-40 Original? Help?
I've come across an 1873 in outstanding shape and am wondering if any of you experts can chime in regarding the originality of the finishes.
Here is a link to some pics:

Let me know what you wise men think! Thanks!

Sorry about the extra pics. It's just the 1873 I have questions about... 0 -
Bert H should be able to give you some information 0 -
Hi AdventureTime~
Your '73 has seen better days.. The wood and metal have been heavily worked over.. The barrel, magazine tube, and end cap appear to have been stripped completely.. It would be hard to grade since the original finish is just a memory.. Bert should be able to help with a value..0 -
It definitely is not what I would refer to as being "in outstanding shape". As Hangfire pointed out, it has been worked on. 0 -

And just exactly how did you interpret that[?]

The way I read it, his question was straightforward, and it has been answered.0 -
I'll comment on the wood finish....
There is still good wood to metal fit, which says it wasn't sanded or
wasn't sanded hard.
But the finish was removed with a Homer Formby's type of finish
remover which allows most of the original patina to remain.
Than a new finish was applied over the wood, probably a Tung oil.
This was usually done when the finish flakes off in small patches, as
the same thing happened on my old 94. The resulting restore never
came close to the old finish and duplicating the original finish is difficult.
I have no idea what that rifle is selling for, your interest as a
shooter only as it's collector interest is way gone as the others
have said.
good luck, Thor0 -
Gentleman, thank you for the input. I assumed it had been worked on, but was uncertain by how much.
I picked it for a song and will keep it as a shooter.
Thank you all!0
