I have some copper shells that are stamped on the head with, 28 40 or 30 40, P207 and VHB1, can any one tell be what they are for and if they have any value?
Thank you,

I should add they are still loaded with what looks like copper bullets. 0 -
I'm assuming you mean that you have some loaded ammunition, with brass cases and some sort of bullet in them, and that the numbers that you're referring to are stamped on the base around the primer? Pics would help but sounds like mostly old military ammo and not worth anything more than plinking ammo, unless berdan primed then junk unless you have a lot of it. 0 -
They are probably copper washed or copper plated steel cases. Check them with a magnet. The same with the bullet. 0 -
yes, a magnet will stick to them, thank you, but are they a 30 cal round or what? and yes it is stamped on the primer end, thr bullet mic's about 0.320 0 -
can I shoot them through a 30-06? 0 -
.320 in a .308 bore I think not as to shooting them unless you just want to do it ONCE KABOOM 0 -
Luther- we do not have enough information to tell you what you have- except it probably is NOT 30-06. Steel cartridge cases were used in some of the Communist ammo such as .72x54R, 7.62x39, and some of the 8mm Mauser ammo from the same countries. NONE of which can be safely fired in a 30-06. If you post photo of the ammo (see the sticky on posting photos?) we may be able to make a good guess at it. 0 -
Headstamp codes say 1940 Germany, most likely 8x57mm Mauser. Need some pics. 0
