new model 1873/73 dumb question

Why does the new 1873/73 have what looks to be some knurling on the back of the bolt being a lever gun? I'm sure there's an answer but I obviously don't know it! Thanks.

FWIW I'd love to have this little thing!!

  Dust cover, Winchester had one almost 90 years. Before Stoner put one on his AR.

  Does it need to be open when in use?

  The dust cover is moved back out of the way as the bolt moves back to pick up a loaded round. The knurling is so you can move it manually.
