A while back I talked about a winchester 1892 38-40. It has a 22 inch barrel that is half round and octagon. It has a button mag. It is a beautiful rifle. Serial number is 188155. A lot of discussion and you said when I got the serial you can tell if it is all original. Told it is. Thanks for your help.

I'm not Bert, but, I do have copies of books. All I can tell you is, your 92 was built in the early part of 1902.
I'm sure Mr. Hartman will be along presently to give you a more concise answer.

The factory ledger record indicates that it should have a 24-inch barrel. What is the exact distance from the muzzle face to the forward most part of the front sight dovetail cut?

Bert it looks like the barrel is 21 and 9/16 with out threads. From back of barrel toback of front site is 20 and 11/16. To front of sight is 21. The round part of the barrel is 10 and 5/8. The oct is 11 inches without the threads. I will try to post some pictures. Thanks.

The barrel has been shortened (cut down).
