Unusual stock on Ruger 77 MkII
Bought a .270 from a friend of a friend the other day. Good looking rifle; bright blue. The stock, while obviously factory, (Ruger black pad and grip cap--typical Ruger checkering pattern) is lighter colored, has interesting grain, and a black fore end tip. Wondering if it's some kind of special issue.

Black forend tips were issued on the lightweight rifles.. how long is the barrel??

Barrel is 22" and I thought the lightweight was discontinued prior to the Mark II. I have a lightweight .308 and the stock is the conventional dark color.
EDIT: Nope, I just checked my Ruger book and the lightweight was still made in the Mark II. Still I'm quite sure this .270 is not the lightweight.
EDIT II: The guy that I got this rifle from was not a "gun guy" so I'm certain he didn't change the stock and there are no signs of that. Actually it's the stock color and grain that visually jumps at you. I'll try to get my wife to help with posting pictures.0 -
I am not sure at all, but it is possible that a standard rifle profile will fit the lightweight stock...barrel just being shorter????

Morning, Ambrose~
On occasion, Ruger used Circassian Walnut on some guns.. I don't recall the details..This sounds like what you have.. Might click around here for more info..

Thanks, Hangfire, That's it. So it's circassian walnut. I found a designation of 77RCW Mark II in that link. It came to me with a matte finish Nikon 3-9X on it but it is too pretty for a dull finish scope so I put a gloss Leupold Vari-x III 2 1/2-8 on it.
Thanks again!0 -
You're welcome.. It makes a nice looking stock.. 0 -
Just in case you were curious, the value of the Ultalight rifles with the Circassian stocks is quite a bit higher then the standard stocks. The Ruger folks really like them, much like the "plum" coloring that some of the M77's show after time.
My very first rifle was a Ruger M77 MKII Ultralight in .308 Winchester. My dad purchased it for me in 1998. It has the 20" pencil-think barrel that shoots 180 grain Federal bluebox and 180 grain Remington Core-Lokt loads great at 100 yards. If you shoot more then 3 shots in a short time, the barrels really begin to heat up and the accuracy tends to really suffer.
Mine does not have the nice stock, but it did start to turn plum at the receiver. I have been offered by numerous people to sell it, but it is not going anywhere until my nephew gets old enough to deer hunt. I have replaced the factory wood stock with a synthetic stock for now.
