My guess is that the last two numbers have been transposed. The date should be 74, not 47. I know that the Belgian made Brownings, made in 73 have a similarly transposed serial number, i.e.37. I wasn't aware that the Japanese made Brownings, also had a transposed date?

Never knew about transposed serial numbers...interesting information. Thank you. Another couple of questions maybe you can answer. Is this rifle a sporter model? Is the recoil pad factory fitted?

I have a B78 with a serial number ending in 37 and when I called Browning to confirm the manufacture date they told me that serial numbers are transposed on the 73-74 models. Good luck with your B78, it's a great gun.
