Browning-78 / Help with year of manufacture
I recently purchased a Browning-78 and I'm attempting to learn the year of manufacture. Serial #8424W47. Barrel markings, right side Browning-78 Caliber .22-250 Only / Patent Pending, left side Browning Arms Company Morgan, Utah & Montreal P.Q. / Made in Japan. 24" Octagon barrel. Stock - Browning recoil pad, cheek piece with checkered pistol grip and checkered schnabel forend. What information I have access to on Browning serialization doesn't seem work with this rifle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that the last two numbers have been transposed. The date should be 74, not 47. I know that the Belgian made Brownings, made in 73 have a similarly transposed serial number, i.e.37. I wasn't aware that the Japanese made Brownings, also had a transposed date? 0 -
Never knew about transposed serial numbers...interesting information. Thank you. Another couple of questions maybe you can answer. Is this rifle a sporter model? Is the recoil pad factory fitted? 0 -

Need quality close-up photos, for the above questions.

I have a B78 with a serial number ending in 37 and when I called Browning to confirm the manufacture date they told me that serial numbers are transposed on the 73-74 models. Good luck with your B78, it's a great gun. 0
