wow sounds more like a Gun built in Europe . I would say better than
most if English stock and 20 Ga. would make nice Bird gun.
EDIT Hey from what you describe Checkered wood on Buttplate area instead of butplate. and English name that little gun would be in my gun safe for anything under $1000.00 and if I could examine it or see pictures the price would have a good chance of being higher.MAYBE MUCH HIGHER buy it if you can. I commend you for not wanting to take advantage of a widow.

the barrel also has "sheffield" on it. Very nice "small framed" straight stocked firearm. the butt stock is checkered instead of a butt plate. just needed to know a "ball park" to offer.

    dirtcop,

The proper way to resolve these questions is to provide some sharp, quality photographs of the shotgun, frame, water table and the area under the barrels at the actions. These will show us any proof marks which help tell the story of your firearms.

    Best.

from what little i got to inspect it, i would conservatively say 75-80% metal and 60% on the wood. there is not engraving or embelishments on the side plates.everything is very tight. bores are dirty but can be cleaned. ill post pics as soon as i can.

I surmise that you are talking about a true sidelock hammerless gun? Does it have bushed firing pins? Hinged forward trigger? British proofmarks?
Sheffield is in England; sounds as if you may have an English gun there. Need good pictures.

GOOGLE search brings up photos of a similarly marked shotgun. Although the markings show that English steel was used in manufacturing the barrels. All the internal proof marks are Belgian. Obviously your shotgun might be different? Can't tell till we see photos of the proof marks. The Belgians did this for many years. Using various English markings to lead folks into believing that the shotguns were British made.
