USFA SA - "China Camp"
I picked up a pair of these today. Unfired!
My question has to the gun's finish. Its called: "silver steel competition finish".
I see a few spots where a little light rust might just be starting.
What is recommended as far as care for these guns finish?
Thanks.

As I understand it, the "silver competition finish" is NO finish. The guns are bare chrome moly steel "in the white."
Treat the rust spots as you would any other rust spot.
Keep clean and oiled when not shooting.
Good luck.
The only ones of these I have seen in use were not exactly rusty, but they were darkening from surface oxidation wherever regular handling and shooting did not keep them rubbed bright.0 -
Kroil and burlap.I guess The Idea is to allow them to develop Patina over the bare metal nothing wrong with that just let them STAIN not actively Rust. I would look at Birchwood Casey Browning liquid 0 -
My experience with carbon steel that hasn't been plated or blued, hasn't been positive. After removing the rust with kroil and burlap. Coat the bare steel surfaces with a high quality paste wax. Let dry than buff. Hopefully the wax coating, will protect the bare steel surfaces. 0 -
I vote for keeping them rubbed down and oiled, especially right after shooting. I would be leery of leaving them in a leather holster for very long. 0 -
Thanks for the suggestions! I have Kroil & burlap.
rufe,
My wife picked up some of that Ren. Wax.....I've been wanting to try it.
Hawk C.,
Yes, dark spots/areas...that is exactly what it looks like.

Nothing to do with the finish but.....
China Camp was a good friend of mine. I shot matches with him for many years going back to before he got into Cowboy shooting. He won the End of Trail match for 5 years in a row and was inducted into the Cowboy Shooting Hall of Fame.
His real name was Dennis Ming and died too early of a heart attack Aug 31, 2008. He was a great ambassador for the Cowboy Shooting sport. Dennis was the Director of Pharmacy at the UCI medical center and a 25 year reserve Police Officer with the Orange PD in southern calif.0 -
Laredo Lefty,
Thanks for the added information on Mr. Ming. It sounds like he was a good friend and a good man.
I'm sorry about your loss.

Hey, Von F...why don't you get with Ford's Gunsmithing, and ask them for a quote on nickel-finishing these revolvers?
They may quote you a reasonable price, as there is no labor/procedure involved vis-a-vis the removal of old finish. And the nickel finish they provide is truely first-rate!
I had a New Century .44 S&W triple lock done by them..and the work was excellent! Just a thought. Take a look at their quality nickel finishing via their website. Best.0
