What is a a Drop lock SXS double
Local auction This week-end has a Westley Richards SxS very high grade
However in the description It states made between 1908-1915 and is a TRUE drop lock action. Is this another term used by British Gunmakers for DETACHABLE locks [?][?][?]

Drop Lock is the usual term for the WR hand detachable box lock. They drop out of the hinged floorplate of the action.
Not at all like H&H detachable side locks.

Yes. Hand detachable. They started using those sometime in the 1880s I believe. You should be able to find pics on their web site. 0 -
Drop locks are only seen in the very highest quality shotguns. There are a couple of differnces in regards to what a drop lock actually is: Here on this side of the pond a drop lock is what the Brits call a Trigger lock, which means that the locks are a part of the trigger group and the entire unit comes out from below...Think about an M1 Rifle trigger group. A "true" drop lock means that there is a panel ahead of the trigger guard and when this is opened the lock mechanisim can be removed. Naturally this is extremely expensive and complex when compred with the more common box lock or even the higher grade side locks. Westly Richards is well known for their use of drop locks. 0 -

on the James River in Va. really strange Over 50 African Game heads and full mounts Including Spotted Cats with paperwork Fur coats Black Rhino mount and others Salt water rods by the dozen with PEEN reels and bill fish mounts Lots of art works . Two English shot guns and the rest of the guns are just so so Three Jap model 99 that are poor condition last ditch models no MUM couple of Browning A5 etc But no BIG GAME GUNS[?]many of the Mounted items can only be sold to Va. residents

Well the drop lock Westley Richards and the Chrch Hill side lock went for 10K each and the black Rhino mount went for $55,000 . I was temped but alas though both shotguns were TOP retail and knew I would die too young if I brought a rhino mount home . 0 -
