Colt SAA question
I picked up a first generation Colt SAA, serial number 180540, 7 1/2" barrel, one piece wood grips, in 45 Colt. Barrel has one line address, all numbers match. Condition is very nice, bluing is really good, light turn line, minor wear on cylinder, barrel is very good with shine at muzzle. The bore is perfect. The case color is pretty much faded and gone.
This Colt was manufactured in late 1898, according to what I've found, and is a smokeless powder frame.
This gun is a consignment. My question is, does the Colt warrant a factory letter?
I'm going to list it on the auction side, when I get time and weather to take good pictures. Quite honestly, this is one of the nicest old Colts I've ever had in my hand. What do you old Colt guys think?
Thank you for your time.

Be careful there are Very VERY few colt Saa first gen. pistols in 38special and most run in a time frame that they lost factory records and will not letter. This is a photo of mine that records were lost and I went ahead and had engraved and I installed and fitted a pair of elephant Ivory grips to. I show 1930 as first year of 38Special replacing 38 colt that was reintroduced in 1922 after being drop the first time in 1914. If you give me serial I might have better /more information. The only true way is to get a letter from Colt. But I don't think with the information you have provided it is all original factory. EDIT II converted early First Gen gun. I see the auction Closed with out reaching the reserve But now relisted at starting $4000.00 I would damn sure want a letter from colt before I would spend that much and that would be a VERIFIED letter by calling Colt direct.

Real nice looking Colt SAA, Got my ivory grips the way I wanted, They look some what old, I boiled them in tea. A 38 Special sure would be nice to shoot. 0 -
Hi, Perry Shooter. The serial # is 341095, and it is Item # 391527261. Thanks for the warning. I wrote the seller and he/she says they don't know if the barrel and cylinder were replaced to make it into a .38 Special. You pays your money and you takes your chance, I guess. I, for one, am not going to pay the money. Regards Jim 0 -

I clicked on firearms for sale and there was a gun that looked like the one you posted a pic of, however I couldn't enlarge it enough to see if it was the one you posted. However from the small pic it looked awful close[:p][:p]0 -
According to my Colt book by R.L. Wilson, the 38 Special was first introduced in 1930. Serial no. at the beginning of 1930 is 353800. 0
