    That serial number falls in the 4th model range. If it's a 4th model it was likely made in 1908 or 1909.

    Your ser# is in the range of S&W top break 38 double action 4th model

    ser# 382,021 was the latest of the 38 top break 4th model to be an antique (pre 1898)

    Your ser# 524626 would have been produced +/- late 1907, to get closer contact S&W for shipping date.

    Thank you gents, I thought it might be a 4th Model.
    One more question, I know the 2" barrel version is rare, and I'm pretty sure this one was cut down.
    Were they made with the full address/patent date stamp on the barrel rib, or did S&W make these from longer barrels?

    The 4th model S&W 38 top break revolver was produced in 3 1/4", 4", 5", & 6" barrel lengths. The 2" was not a standard factory offering.

    There is a possibility you may have a special order gun, but odds are, it was cut down.
