about what # did Winchester go to a 2 3/4
chamber for the 16 ga?
I have one in the 250000 range and no easy access to a gunsmith.

The easiest way is to take a hair dryer heat the chamber area and insert a candle let cool remove and measure, wax chamber cast

Talkin' about a model 12? I believe that if it is not marked 2-3/4" it is automatically 2-9/16". 0 -
Ok, so what do I do with a sticky candle?
I,m asking for a serial # range.0 -
OK. In a model 12, the switch to 2-3/4" occurred in 1927, which would be in the 465,000 to 510,000 range.
Bert, thanks for nailing this down. I was working from some older published data to try and get an answer out.
I have a copy of the Stadt Winchester Shotgun & Shotshell book in my reference collection; what do you think of this?0 -
The change to the a 2-3/4" chamber occurred in 1926, and was first listed in the January 1927 catalog.
The actual serial number range for the year 1927 was 498102 - 541109. The first 16-gauge gun with a 2-3/4" chamber was very near serial number 468955.
Edit: I forgot to mention... if the barrel or the bottom of the receiver frame is not marked 2-3/4", it has the older (shorter) 2-9/16" chamber. Winchester did not mark chamber lengths on any of the early production Model 1912 or Model 12 guns until 1926. If no chamber length is marked on the gun, the chambers are as follows;
20-Ga - 2-1/2"
16-Ga - 2-9/16"
12-Ga - 2-3/4"0 -
Done properly you end up with a cast of the chamber in wax that you can measure, guns pushing 100 years old, there is a good chance something has been done to the chamber I prefer to know what I have 0 -

It is a generally a good reference except for any references to dates of manufacture.0 -

With no chamber marking, it is a 2-9/16". and yes, you could have internal damage.0 -
Thanks, Bert; that was the type of info I wanted. 0
