Refinshing a winchester 94
I have a 1970 Winchester model 94 Lone Star Commemorative that needs work. It was not stored right the wood and receiver need to be refinised, the bore and internals look great, never fired, so to me it's worth fixing up (some say not)so here is my question who can I send this receiver any other metal parts to, they are gold plated. Any questions please ask, Thank You.

Google found one new in box with papers for $700. I would think that you will spend at least half that to refinish it likely more. With collector value gone it's a shooter to me.

as above. no matter what you do to this it has lost ALL it's collector value. sell this for a 'shooter' and buy the n.i.b. one, you will be $$$ ahaead. 0 -
As said, it will never regain the value of a collector.
On the other hand, it will make a GREAT shooter.
Go for it, just don't do it with the thought of it having collector value afterwards.0 -
Yes you are all right I know the $$ is gone, but like anything else in this shop be it an old motorcycle or gun I just can't let it die ugly so I fix it up pretty maybe just for me? Don't recall anyone saying I was the sharpest tool in this shed. Still any info would be great. Thank You. 0 -
Do you want to redo the gold plating?
Finish choices are limited. This is likely one of the receivers that will not take conventional bluing. It would have to go to somebody who had the special bath to blue it or it would have to be plated or coated. The simplest approach might be to have it done in Cerakote overall. Or coat the receiver and blue the barrel, magazine, and hardware.0 -
I think it would be a good DIY candidate. There are kits and video's for gold plating on fleabay and youtube. I'd use LinSpeed oil as the finish on the stock.
The worst that can happen is you end up with an ugly shooter, which is where you are starting.
Can you post some good pic's of the damage?
I understand the need to fix it. I have repaired a lot of stuff for people that were losing money propositions. Partly for the challenge and so the great grandson can have something that works from gramps.
added I'm not sure how they do it now but stuff was flash plated with copper then plated again with like gold, nickel. If your finish is flaking off look closely to see if it's red und the gold. I would think that if you expect paint to stick you will need to remove the flaking finish.0 -

Yes the gold that is on there now (receiver)looks like it's just falking off (small spot by the wood) I'm sorry but I do not know how to do a picture. So yes plating or coating would work I think, I have used Robar before for pistols but I didn't think this was up there ally maybe I'm wrong. I have to ask what is cerakote it's maybe what I want, again the rifle will never be what it was so I'm just going to make into something nice, I can do the wood work no problem, it's the metal coatings I can't do. If the gold is flaking off would the surface have to be worked ? like wet sanding, and no it does not need to be gold. Thank You again.0 -
I got it (cerakote coatings) I'll look into it. Thank You again. 0 -
Had a customer bring in a post 64 Win 94 with very little of a silver finish left on the receiver. With nothing to lose, we buffed it clean & ran it through the blueing tanks. Other parts came out dark blue/black & the receiver was mottled "purple-ish." It was a shooter & he liked it. 0
