Hi all i have heard these rifles were issued in the white. Is this correct and why was the reason behind this?
i have one and the underside of the barrel surely seems to be the case but if so why would they do that?
Thanks Kevin

I can't say that this is the specific reason?
Before the battles of the First World War. When it was realized that the brightly polished metal reflected light, and was easily seen from miles away.
Many armies issued military rifles unfinished, it what was called "bright". The soldiers were expected to keep them clean and highly polished. To look pretty, when marching in parades and on guard duty.0 -
When inspecting the rifles it was easier to see rust and neglect if they were in the white. 0
