Masking off with tape and then bead or sand blasting makes a nice non glare surface under your final finish.

Does anyone know of a shop who does this type of work? Im not talking about a finish but cutting or rolling of a pattern into the steel on the top of a barrel. Thanks for any help[:)]

Exactly what type of pattern do you mean? Do you have a specific example in mind?

If you just want a matte finish, you can bead/sand blast as mentioned above. Assuming finished (not stainless) steel, the barrel will have to be refinished after that.

Careful use of a scotchbrite pad can leave a decent set of directional lines. If you want the "jeweled" look (ie "engine turning") that's done with a rotary abrasive pad and (usually) a jig to control the application.

If you really want something the equivalent of cut checkering, that's usually done by hand, and is pretty labor-intensive.

If you mean fluting the barrel, there are a number of places that can do this. Can't speak to the quality of the work, but here's one place I just pulled right off "Google": http://www.kampfeldcustom.com/index_022.htm

I may be wrong But I thinkHackley 69 is looking for more like the pattern That was rolled on the top surface of some single barrel Trap guns and like the pattern on the rib between SXS shotguns.barrels.
