The cartridge is a variation of the Dutch Beaumont, Model 1871 military cartridge. The original cartridge was designed to be fired in a single shot rifle. When the Beaumont was converted to repeater in the late 1870's. The cartridge was altered in dimension, to the one your inquiring about.
The original cartridge dimensions are given in "Cartridges of the World" by Barnes. The revised 71/78 cartridge for the repeating rifle. Has been lengthened .080. Apparently this was done so that the original single shot ammo could be used in the repeater. But not vise versa.0 -
Yes i know that i have a duth beaumont vitali on it's way.couldn't get my paws on any 50-90 sharps so going for awhile with 32 ga brass shot shells. just need a giudeline as to the dimension. we have a cotw but our edition doesn't spec the dimesions.

Years back, I was into the 19th Century BP military rifles.
Because of the BP fouling, many of their chamber and bore dimensions are way over sized. As compared to our modern cartridges. I would check the dimensions in the reference portions of COW, to see if you could utilize any other brass. I wouldn't be either buying or try to form any other brass. Until you do a chamber cast of the Beaumonts chamber, to see what the actual dimensions are.0 -
Bummer. That is the only old cartridge I DON'T have in that book. Sorry.
There appears to be two versions of that cartridge too, so you might want to do a chamber cast and measure it yourself.0 -
Have a Beaumont & a couple of ancient cartridges but don't intend to try it (bore looks pretty rough anyway). 0
