Need pre 64 Win Mod. 94 EXPERT

Hello- I have found a pre 64 Win model 94, with the original box for $700. The rifle is in vg condition, but it has a Marbles compass imbedded in the butt stock. Im considering purchasing the rifle, and swapping all the wood for other matching pre 64 wood. The rifle is a flat band model 94. Should I pass on the rifle entirely, swap the wood, or leave it alone? If I buy the replacement wood, is it a 1:1 swap (since it's all pre 64 wood) or is there inletting that will need to be done? Will there be a problem due to flat band if the wood didn't come from a flat band rifle? Is the wood marked w/ part or serial numbers? Thanks!

  I am no expert on Winchester 94's.
  
  But if I had the opportunity to buy a per 64, 94 with the original box. In NRA VG condition = " VERY GOOD" In perfect working condition, no appreciable wear on working surfaces, no corrosion or pitting, only minor surface dents or scratches. For $700, Marbles compass or no Marbles compass. I would jump on it.

  You have not purchased it yet? He who hesitates on old Winchester's in good shape, at bargain prices, usually looses out. Get with it, what are you waiting for?

  The wood is not marked with any parts/serial number markings. It is easily changed from one rifle to another. You will need to make certain that the fore end you obtain is the correct long fore end style for that period. There also was a slight variation in the shape of the comb on the butt stock which occurred around 1951 which would post date your rifle but still be pre 64. So you should make certain to get the correct style replacement. What is the caliber and serial number of the rifle? So this will not be a simple "off the shelf" switch. In addition you will end up with a "very good" rifle with "excellent" wood which will be obvious and in the end reduce the value of the rifle.

  You will lose additional value with the wood swap. I would rather have an original rifle with the compass than a goobered one with later wood.
