k98 value
I walked into a local pawn shop and found a rifle they called a old russian rifle. When I picked it up and seen mod98 on the side I got excited. When I seen the 250 price tag I bought it. Its in great shape all numbers matching except bolt and came with the bayonet. Its stamped duv42 and lots of eagles. The serial number is 1523d. From what I have found researching it I know it was made in Berlin. I have also read that the duv42 is less common. Would like to know what the experts value it at. Also is there any sites to research the serial number

Probably a little more than you bought it for. As far as collector value, there is the bolt S/N not matching the rest of the rifle S/N. So, that's about nil at this point. The fact it is all complete does add value to it, that it didn't used to. But, overall, not much. 0 -
My Standard Catalog of Military Firearms 7th edition, lists the Model 98 Carbine prices as Exc = 1500, V.G. = 850, Good = 600, Fair = 350.
If this truly is a Russian capture, with electro pencil markings, then prices run something like Exc = 500, V.G. = 350, Good = 250, Fair = 200. Those prices don't include the bayonet which adds 250 - 50 value, depending on condition.

Its not russian capture. The shop just didn't know what it was. Ive looked all over it and there is nothing to tell me it was captured. I will post pics of it tomorrow. 0 -
duv is Berliner-Lubecker Maschinfabriken, Lubeck Works; 42 is 1942.
I think the serial #'s are recycled 1-9999 then a suffix added, "d" would be the 5th time through the cycle.
Likely has a dark bore but should shoot good enough to be a meat gun.
I'd have the head space checked or tie it to wheel and fire the first two rounds with a lanyard, then inspect cases carefully.
Factory commercial 8mm Mauser is usually on the weak side, strong gains to be had by reloading. Lyman cast bullet 323470 works well and makes for cheap trigger time.
With the pig sticker included you did ok, too bad it lost its proper bolt. Would have been a real bargain otherwise.0 -
i think its a bargain anyway, the russian refurb,s are just about double that and they will not have bayonet and may have a realy bad bore, don,t ask me how i know.eastbank. 0 -

While the duv42 is a bit less common, it's not uncommon enough to drastically impact price.
Unless it is a real beater, as a non RC I'd say tentatively that you got the gun for half price, and a 100ish dollar value bayonet (if including scabbard and frog) for free- at very least, even the bayonet alone is worth at least $50.0 -
First, without photos just about impossible to tell you in detail what your 98k is worth...with photos lots of folks on this forum could pin it down for you. But, having said that, finding "good" 98k's, even mismatched ones, is getting harder and harder. The captured Russian stuff flooded the market years ago but yours evidently is not that. More likely it was captured by GI's or other Allies on the western front and was a bring back, or just bought years ago. When our guys captured German bolt rifles they usually pulled the bolts out and threw them on one pile and the debolted rifles on another...and ruinning any collector value down the road! Don't know where you heard that duv "is less common" but actually over 250k were produced in that specific factory in that year so actually the reverse is true but what is getting more and more rare is to find a complete matching 98k today! Any maker, any factory, any year....just hard to find. But I agree that what you paid is a deal....again, without seeing photos of the rifle...I know that if was in the market for one and was offered one at that price that was not "bubbed up" I would jump on it in a NY minute! As to "research" get a copy of Laws "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" or Lud Olsen's "Mauser Bolt Action Rifle" or Ball's "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" and that should get you started! If you get to "Backbone" go to p. 175 and check out your particular rifle. If you really get into it you can take your rifle apart and match each part serial #/waffenmark to "other markings" on that page and see exactly what you got. Anyway, good luck and welcome to the 98k Club![:)][:D] 0
