If you're going to pay $6/box, might as well buy true match ammo:

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/rifle-ammo.aspx?c=96&b=RWS&kec=2

I think because this is listed as "rifle" ammo, its been largely overlooked by the rimfire ammo scroungers.

And since there is no real "question" in this "Ask the Experts" thread, I'm going to introduce one.

Anyone know when the .22LR ammo shortage is likely to end?

I'm hearing mumblings about six more months, but this is basically internet idle chatter. Anyone have an inside/industry perspective?

Don't be in a hurry when you order from midway since my 22lr should be shipped Nov 2014 (MayBe)[xx(][:(]

After the '08 election panic, it took about 18 months

Yeah, 6 months from now corresponds roughly to 18 months after Obama's second term started, so that's at least consistent. We'll see if it happens or not. IMO, this time the "panic" was worse; maybe it will last a little longer.

I'd say in general, ammo shortage isn't an "off or on" thing like a light switch where one day the shelves are bare, and the next day they're full. What happens is that with time supply and demand re-equilibrate, and the shelves slowly fill up again.

I think we're already seeing some re-availability of common types of handgun and rifle ammo like 45ACP, 9mm luger, 7.62x39, .308, etc.

I don't think these are sitting on shelves in quantity yet (at least not where I am), but unlike .22, all of them seem to be available online, in prices reasonably approximating pre-panic ones. Prices are higher, of course, than 2-3 years ago, but that would be expected regardless of shortages.

With respect to surplus type ammo (eg 7.62x54R, 5.45x39, etc) even supplies of many of those dried up this time, but they seem to be available again. .22LR is the highest demand ammo, and I think for this one, the shortage will probably last the longest.

I continue to be puzzled by the general shortage of 22LR. I thought it was over back in October when Gander Mountain was selling 1400 round pails of Remington's Golden Bullet (36 grain HP) for $69.99 which works out to about $2.50 a box. But finding any now, at GM or elsewhere, isn't easy. Makes no sense to me. . . .
