Belgian Mauser 308
What would be a fair price for this Belgian FN 98 Mauser Carbine 308.
It has a lot of wear to it, and a stock repair at the wrist, but it's solid. Bore is excellent condition. Bolt and receiver dont have matching #'s. No other parts are numbered. I'm thinking about buying it.

FN sold a number of these rifles to many countries. Most have crests or other markings which determine the value.
The rifle pictured looks like a short model 98. I know Venezuela was one of several countries that purchased the short model from FN and CAI imported some. All Venez, I have examined have crests.
Since the rifle had no identifiers that I can see and no matching bolt, IMHO, you have a handy carbine providing bore condition. From what I can see, I would be reluctant to pay over $200 for it.0 -
If it passes the "bullet test" at the muzzle, it's worth about $200-no tax and no FFL fee. 0 -
If you have never shot one of these short barreled carbines. It's quite a experience. The one I owned was also FN, used by the Dutch police. Had a big "W" crest, for the reigning queen.
Shot it only once, with 8mm ball ammo. The muzzle blast/flash from the 18" barrel is horrific. No fun at all. Unless you intend to load it with reduced power handloads. Or use it as a seldom used behind the seat truck gun, don't even buy it, IMHO.0 -
.308 shouldn't be nearly as bad as full power 8x57. 0
