What do you guys consider to be the most desirable of the older 94's. I really would like to have one with a crescent butt stock, but I have seen them in round,Octagon and half octagon/round barrels. Is it just personal or would one expect to pay more for a particular type of barrel. I am talking a gun you could shoot but also be in a collectable group. I've looked at most the gun sellers on line and they are all over the board on price and no particular design seems to lead in cost except those of special ordered guns and fancy grade wood.

I'm far from an expert, but:
Are you looking for a vintage 1894? There are loads of them on the auction side that I'm sure you could find one in just about any caliber and any configuration you may want. 1/2 mag, take down, pistol grip, checkered, etc, oct barrel, and crescent butt. 30-30(30WCF) is probably the most common caliber. I feel a nice shooter can still be bought quite reasonably.
Or, are you looking for a newer "post 64" '94?
    Good luck,
    Ed

They are some used Comm. shooters that would fit the bill, if you are not looking for a true vintage one-

Winchester manufactured the original Model 1894/94 with an octagon barrel from October 1894 through December 1937. There are lots of them out there if you look.

I am looking for a vintage 1894 with the Hexagon barrel and the crescent stock. If there is tons of them I am looking in the wrong place. Of course there is all kinds of Winchester 94's but I am not seeing many that fit what I am looking for. I would think there has to be a cut off year for the Hexagon barrel with the crescent stock.

You won't find one with a hexagon barrel. A hexagon only has 6 sides, which Winchester never made. You want an octagon (8-sided) barrel.

There are several listed on the auction side. Here are a couple but there are more:

Spider, apparently you are not up on the nomenclature: An 8-sided rifle barrel is called a "hex" barrel! (And a 1911 pistol is loaded with a "clip", and a Leupold scope is a "lee-ah-pold", and the part that we seat into a cartridge case is called a "bullet head", etc.)
