Your's isn't all that late production wise. Serial numbers go on up to the low 500,000's, at the end. Circa 5/45.

There are presentation 38 H's known, with higher serial numbers than yours.

My WAG yours was made no later than the middle of 44. Quite possibly in 43, seeing it's over 50,00 SN's lower than the 5/45 guns.

My trigger looks grey. The barrel marking should be on right side toward front. Can be seen when you hold the slide back.

Sauer 38(H) pistols procured by the Heereswaffenamt were all marked with the military acceptance stamp, "eagle over 37," and often with the commercial test proof mark, "eagle over N." Those issued to the police carry either "eagle C" or "eagle F" acceptance stamps.

It sounds like you have a Type Four 38-H (with one Eagle 37 Waffenamt and a zinc trigger). If it is missing the thumb safety, than you have a Model 38. Either would be, as you surmised, later war production models.

Unless I'm wrong, which is possible.

Mine is #500075 which presumably is late war production, judging also by lesser finish, no thumb safety, zinc trigger, and acceptance stamp (left side of trigger guard) done in haste showing only the upper part of eagle & nothing else. Eagle over N on right side of frame & slide. Eagle over (something) on barrel. Is this a model 38 (no H)?

According to my reference. The Sauer pistols without the thumb safety, ("Hammer Safety"), denoted with the hyphenated "H" . Are just plain Model 38's. There are two different series of these pistols. Very early and very late production. Although your serial number is over 500,000. Thousands of additional pistols were produced. Serial numbers well over 506,000 are known.

My 38H serial number 448175 has the thumb safety which I failed to mention in my initial post and zinc trigger. Thanks Mark
