Remington 700 receiver cut-out ?
The top rear receiver section of a used Remington 700 ADL I just purchased is cut out slightly under, and in front of the rear sight base. The cut-out is about 1/2 inch square. What is the purpose and is it factory or custom? None of my other Remington 700's have this feature. Thanks for any help.

The older Remington 722 and 721 had that cut-out and I have seen early 700's with it as well. I do not know what it was for since I have never seen a Remington 722, 721, or 700 that would accept a stripper clip. At least one vintage scope mount, the Leupold adjusto-mount, took advantage of that cut-out.
The Remington model 30 and some of the Winchester model 54 and 70 were set up to take stripper clips.0 -
Some of the early Remington Bolt Actions. Were chambered for the .300 & .375 H & H cartridges. These were 1/4" longer in OAL, than the 30-06. Any chance that the cut-out is to provide clearance for these cartridges? 0 -
A stripper clip guide makes sense to me.. The gun is in 243 caliber, made in 1963 with a 20 inch barrel. Thanks for your replies. 0 -
After market adappters were avilable to screw on the receiver, using the rear scope base holes. This allowed the use of stripper clips. 0
