    Not just barrel length.

The model 17 has the Patridge type target front sight and the model 18 has the Baughman type combat front sight.

The model 18 was discontinued in 1985. The 4" model 17 came out in 1986 to replace the 18.

Joe is right on the money.
Originally, the model 17 was the K 22 Masterpiece.
The model 18 was the K 22 Combat Masterpiece.

Both guns have the same action and frame, and they're more similar than different.

In a nutshell the 17 is a target revolver with 6" bbl and target type sights. The model 18 is designed to simulate a K-frame combat revolver, and has a 4" barrel and combat type "ramp" sight.

My model 17 has a wide checkered "target" hammer and (I think) trigger, though I don't know if these are standard for the model, let alone whether or not they ever appear on a model 18 (my guess is probably not).
