I'M LOOKING AT A WHITNEY PHOENIX SPORTING RIFLE IN A ANTIQUE SHOP THAT I HAVE A QUESTION ON -- THE GUN HAS NICE BIRDSEYE MAPLE WOOD A FULL OCTAGON BARREL -- CENTER FIRE -- 40 CAL ??? THE GUN HAS SOME PROBLEMS-- BROKEN MAIN SPRING -- A LITTLE WOOD REPAIR -- CLEAN THE BORE TO FAIR --COST $ 375.00 MY QUESTION IS -- THERE NO PHOENIX MARKINGS ON THE GUN THE ONLY MARKINGS ARE THE SERIAL NUMBER- LOWER TANG AND THE NAME --- J.H.WHEELER --- PROFESSIONALLY STAMPED ON THE TOP OF THE BARREL AT THE BREACH -- THE ONLY J.H. WHEELER I CAN FIND WITH ANY GUN REFERENCE HAS A NUMBER OF PATENTS ON MARLIN FIRE ARMS AROUND 1910 -- IF YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS MATER PLEASE LET ME KNOW -- RICK

  I wouldn't buy it on other than a wall-hanger basis. From your description it isn't even factory original, which would negate any collectors value.
  
  Even in the 19th Century they weren't particularly popular. As they had no primary extraction. Latterly swinging breech block like a Snider. But you had to pull the brass out of the barrel with your fingers.
