30 herret form
Need to know how to form 30-30 cases to the 30 herret, just bought a barrel for my contender, have plenty of 30-30 brass but have no idea how to form them. Is there a book or and instructional leaflet that tells how if so please tell me where to get it.
Thanks

I used to make mine out of 284 Winchester brass.

Full length size in 30 Herrett die. Trim to proper length, choose your method to fire form. I like cast bullets and a light load for the job.0 -

You can't. maybe he was thinking of some other short .30 wildcat cartridge, like the .30 Fat Albert, which is made from284 Win brass. ??0 -

I think the correct case length for the 30 Herrett is 1.6" trim to length is 1.595. None of my handy loading books have any data for it either. However the on line free Hodgdon has it listed under pistol

Full length size your cases. I like Redding sizing die wax or the Lee case lube in the white and red tube.
Use a case trimmer to shorten the cases to the trim to length. I like the Forster case trimmer a lot or perhaps a file trim die. When trimming lots of length my dad would make a pre trim tool. Take some thick flat stock and drill a clearance hole for the neck. Next use a larger drill bit to sink a hole to the proper depth to accommodate the case shoulder. The proper depth leaves enough case neck to square it up properly in a real case trimmer. Insert case in jig and use fine tooth hack saw to cut off the excessive neck.
You may or may not need to inside ream or outside turn the necks due excessive case thickness. The old Winchester Super Speed brass didn't need it for my buddy's gun.
Fire form to you chamber. I used cast bullets for the job.0 -
Yup, I screwed up. That's what I get for going on memory instead of looking at my notes.
I had a 30 Herret barrel that had been re chambered by a local gun smith. This was at least 30 years ago.
I'll try to do better.[:(]

When I did 30 Herretts,I ran a 30-30 case through the Herret die.It came out with a very long neck.If I remember correctly,I put the case in a Lee case trim shellholder, chucked it up in a drill and shortened it with a hacksaw blade.I could not find a Lee trim pilot for the Herrett so I used a 7.62x39 but It trimmed them too short.I took the trim pilot out of the cutter and dropped a small piece of wire in the cutter and tightened the pilot down until it trimmed to Herret lenth. The best way I found to anneal the necks, with what I had,was melt lead in the pot.hold the case neck in the molten lead just long enough that it would no longer stick to the case, and drop the case in a bucket of water set a safe distance from the lead.It was a lot of trouble to make 30 Herrett, but it was the only Contender round that I could hit 12 ga shot shell hulls at 100 yards with a 2x scope, off a solid rest with plenty of time. 0
