I'm fairly new to reloading. Do I need to use a gas check when reloading factory cast bullets. The bullets are Hunter Supply 190gr. FP for .357 mag. Thanks

If you google "wax gas checks" tons of stuff comes up. In my 50 years at reloading I never tried/heard of them. I shot lots of copper ones back when they were cheap. At 40 to 60 bucks a thousand not so much. Most of my lead shooting is plain base or barefoot at appropriate velocity. I would consider aluminum gas checks in a crappy bore rifle I didn't care about. Gliding metal homemade ones might be ok. Cast Boolits has a couple of gas check makers that look interesting.

Just how effective would a "wax gas check" really be? Pretty sure it would melt instantly.

Do you mean - IPCO colloidal graphite grease wads? Yes, they work good for me instead of gas checks when using cast bullets in rifles. Many years ago Ken Waters, Phil Sharpe and others used them with jacketed bullets getting mixed results, including erratic pressures. Eventually, they recommended against using them with metal cased bullets.
