Istanbul (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there.
"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.
"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.
Erdogan said that Ankara was even prepared to build a mosque at the site mentioned by the Genoese explorer.
"I would like to talk about it to my Cuban brothers. A mosque would go perfectly on the hill today," the Turkish leader said.
History books say that Columbus set foot on the American continent in 1492 as he was seeking a new maritime route to India.
A tiny minority of Muslim scholars have recently suggested a prior Muslim presence in the Americas, although no pre-Columbian ruin of an Islamic structure has ever been found.
In a controversial article published in 1996, historian Youssef Mroueh refers to a diary entry from Columbus that mentions a mosque in Cuba. But the passage is widely understood to be a metaphorical reference to the shape of the landscape.

Even if they did beat Columbus by 300 years, they still lost to the Vikings by two centuries.
Norse settlers were setting up in Newfoundland around 1000 AD.

Intersting they want to build a mosque in Cuba and now they have one furnished for them in the USA. Hell with them getting more and more political power why not just let them walk in

Prayer carpets were laid out under the soaring arches of the Washington National Cathedral early Friday for an unprecedented Muslim worship service in one of the best known churches in the United States.
Reverend Gina Campbell welcomed worshippers, declaring the Washington National Cathedral "a place of prayer for all people."
"Let us stretch our hearts and let us seek to deepen mercy for we worship the same God," she told the men and women sitting separately in rows, on the floor before her.

In the sermon, or Khutba, Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool praised religious freedom in America and lashed out against extremism, specifically mentioning Islamic militants who have slaughtered Christians in the Middle East.
"If we do not stop them at the monasteries, they will make their way to the mosques," he said.
Church leaders and their Muslim partners say they hope the Friday Jumaa prayers will send a message of interfaith brotherhood that counters extremists' use of religion to justify hatred and strife.
The idea came to the cathedral's director of religious liturgy, Rev. Gina Campbell, and South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, who is a Muslim, when they organized an interfaith0 -
Oh for Pete's sake. The discovery of Americas by Europeans is largely credited (mistakenly) to Christopher Columbus. But of course he wasn't the first European to discover the Americas, that was Leif Erikson. Furthermore, Columbus was clueless as to where he actually was, thinking he was in India.
Yet, of course, these dolts can claim anything they want. There is a) no evidence of an actual mosque b) no evidence that these mythical mosque builders knew where they were, c) no evidence they reported their "discovery" to anyone (i.e. to actually make it.. you know, an actual discovery). And I notice they can name no specific individual... merely "muslims" (who could have been from anywhere). Big whoop, if they want to change the argument to which false religion discovered the area, they still lost. The natives were practicing false religion far, far earlier.0 -
I believe in middle of the road muslims......and the tooth fairy...and santa claus....wait till their numbers reach a certain percentage in the USA and see what comes out of the closet.. 0
