Question about open carry while hiking in calif

Recently my wife and daughter were out hiking just outside Orcutt California when they encountered a mountain lion about 50 yards away that appeared to be stalking a ground squirrel. Several days later there was a news article about a mountain lion that had attacked and killed a German shepherd somewhere in southern Calif. My question is this. Is it legal to open carry a sidearm while out hiking in California?

  No, open carry is no longer legal in Ca.

  So let me get this right... No open carry but they didn't want to give out CCW's. So this is how they look out for their state residents. Glad I moved out.
