I got to shoot several originals back in the early 70's. Nice rifles and they were worth $ even back then.

added yes a real knowledgeable person would be helpful.

    Perhaps inter-library loan

I'm looking at one now that I think is a copy from the 1860s. Owner says it is stamped S Hawken on barrell but I can't see a thing. It does not have the stamps/marks I would expect to see on an authentic H Hwken rifle. I undertand that some Hawkens rifles made in 1860s after HAWKENS BROS retired were stamped S HAWKEN. Im looking for somebody wh can tell me more.

I would contact the folks at Dixie Gun Works. If they couldn't help? I'm sure they could recommend someone in TN.

As I recall, they had authentic antique guns for sale in their older catalogs. Not just the reproductions, they sell nowadays.

Speaking of reproductions. Quite a number of Hawken type percussion rifles, have been built from kits and scratch over the last 50 years. If at possible. I wouldn't buy one, unless a very knowledgeable collector or even a dealer. Has a hands on with it.

Hugh after Jacob died, Samuel ran the shop alone until 1855. When he retired his son William took and the shop continued to operate and sell rifles bearing the "Hawken" name under his (William S. Hawken) and later owners William L. Watt, and J. P. Gemmer, until Gemmer closed down the business and retired in 1915.

It is certainly possible it is an original Hawken, in the sense it was produced in "The Hawken Shop" if not by Sam.

You might contact the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, NE http://www.furtrade.org/
