Ithaca M37 Shell Stop Problem
I load a shell into the magazine tube. Next, I pull back on the pump handle but the shell fails to leave the magazine tube because the shell stop isn't releasing it. I then slide the pump handle forward to try again but when it goes forward, the shell stop releases the shell and it falls to the ground. When the gun is empty, I can see the shell stop retracting when the pump handle is fully to the rear. It just doesn't release when a shell is in the magazine. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? The gun is over 65 years old but I'd like to keep it working. Thanks for any replies.

Take it apart and clean it. Could be a bad spring, crud build up behind the shell stop. It could be a worn or bent shell stop. Try some other factory ammo first.

added Make sure you shove the shell well up into the magazine. The magazine and ancillary parts on the 37 are much tighter (shells don't rattle) than the 870. I had to buy the MEC Super Sizer to get reloads to work in my 37. 1 would in the mag tube, trying to put a second one in jammed the first. This was AA reloads that worked fine in everything else.0 -

Alternately, use one of the aerosol gun cleaning products and hose the action thoroughly using care to keep the spray off the wood. It would do a better job if you remove the barrel and trigger housing. Re-lube with a light oil and work the action 15-20 times.0 -
aren't there a left and a right shell stop on 37s as others have said a good clean and lube should give u another 100 years or so 0 -
I had a similar problem once years ago. I was loading 20 ga. shells in a 16 ga........[;)] 0
