    It's likely an epoxy type finish. Scraping will work if you are careful. The little Black and Decker "Mouse" sander with 60 or 80 grit to start. Mine doesn't have dust collection.

    You can take it to a commercial furniture stripper if there is one local to you. Otherwise, the last one I did I used single edge razor blades and the trapezoidal shaped box cutting blades. Once I developed a rhythm it was fairly mindless so long as you're careful not to gouge a detail.

    I have always liked to use microscope slides. You have eight sharp sides to work with and they are very efficient. If you choke up on the slide with your thumbs and fingers they will not flex enough to break. They tend to chatter if used one handed. Jim
