Ruger 77/44 loose front swivel stud, any ideas?
Hey everyone i have a new ruger 77/44 that i purchased about a year ago, its stainless with a liminate stock and the front swivel stud turns freely, i can spin it around in both directions with no effort, but i tried to pull on it because i thought it was striped and it doesnt budge, it feels secure but just not sure being as free moving as it is, is this supposed to be this way? If not how in the world do i remove it, i figured if it was striped out i should at least be able to unscrew it but it just spins
Any help is appreciated

Have you looked in the manual? You can download it for free at their website. http://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory.html 0 -
No i havent but good idea, my ruger gunsite scout swivel studs are tight so i was assuming there was a issue with the 77/44 and the front stud wasn't supposed to Move freely or spin, but I suppose it's possible its made that way, ill double check the manual when i get home 0 -
Morning~
It's threaded, and should un-screw.. Take the stock off and you'll see that there's a boss molded into the barrel channel.. The end of the screw is visible.. Try using a punch, or any small tool, to put pressure on it as you un-screw..0 -
Of course its that simple, i dont know why i didnt try that, its makes the most sense, guess i just wanted to pick your guys' brains but ill see if i can get the stock off of her tonight, the rear one is tight, so if the front one is striped and hole wore out what are my options? 0 -
All of my M-77s have a knurled nut in a depression in the front under the barrel..Take the stock off, hold the knurled nut and turn righty tighty..It should firm up...

Got it! Thanks everyone. Pulled the barrel/reciever assy out of the stock and the front swivel stud is bolted through the stock and the lock nut was loose causing it to spin, took a small punch inserted it through the eye of the swivel stud and tightened the lock nut up snug, presto tight like it should be, this makes me feel a lot better the rifle hasnt been shot and i was worried it was a issue in the stock that would require me sending it back to ruger.
Thanks guys0 -
I often use a small amount of two part epoxy like Brownell's Steel Bed to epoxy that nut in place...then some blue Loctite, or often red on the swivel stud itself, so it does not come loose. I hate having one come out and dropping the rifle with/WO a scope on the ground, when it is slung over my shoulder. 0
