drill & tap slug guns
Can shotgun slug guns [older Remington 870] be drilled and tapped on top of the receiver or does it have to b on the side?

Had the wife's 20 ga. 870 done.

My 12ga. has the cantilever on the barrel;

Most shotgun receivers are pretty thin. D&T may only get you a couple of threads to hold a LOT of strain. "Older 870" is about as good of a prospect as you'll find. 0 -
Not a problem, use a Weaver # 62 base, and don't D&T on the very front edge where it's thin.. I've done tons of them that way.... 0 -

+1.Here in NY it used to be slug only for deer. I have drilled and tapped countless shotguns.
870's, 500's, and 37's all work great with a 62 base. 1100's only get a couple threads, for these the Damar is much better with it's angled screws0 -
Bsquare makes a saddle mount that works great with no D&T necessary. a cantilever barrel is best but i used a Bsquare for years with no problems out to 100 yards with slugs on both an 870 and also a 1100 0 -
Better off with the cantilever design. 0 -
Yes a cantilever barrel is hard to beat. I have a Remington 1100 12ga.cantilever and a Browning BPS 20ga cantilever; they both shoot Remington accutips point of aim at 100 yards. And they shoot two shots sometimes touching each other but usually inside of an inch or so. Highly acceptable accuracy from a hunting slug gun. All 4 Whitetail hanging on my wall were killed with one shot and they were all killed with the 1100. I got my first buck with the Browning 20 gauge this season on opening day of modern firearms season and he will not be back from the Taxidermy for a while. I always wondered if the 20 gauge would have enough killing power and I finally got my answer november 14. One shot was all it took. And the Remington accutip struck point of aim. All my shots are from 40 to 75 yards so far. I recommend a good solid steel scope ring and burris zee rings are a good one.

These photos show Leupold PRW rings mounted on the cantilever which i have since replaced because I do not like them. They leave more aggressive marks on the tube than most other Rings and I went back to a Burris zee ring and accuracy improved as well. The old Tasco world class rings are good as well. They have the same design as the zee Rings.0
