Barrel life of 17 HMR
A friend recently purchased a Cooper in 17 HMR here on GunBroker and after receiving it couldn't get better than a 6 inch group no matter what ammo he used. He called Cooper and they told him the barrels were shot out after 2000 rounds. They offered to replace it for $400. Is the barrel life of all 17 HMR's that short?

No, the barrel life of all.17 HMRs is not that short. Typically it is comparable to a .22 WMR. Depending on make, seeing reports of good accuracy to 10,000-17,000 rounds.
I will ask the obvious question about thorough cleaning of the barrel???0 -
Not questioning Cooper's response. Just wondered about other 17 HMRs 0 -
Barrel was thoroughly cleaned. 0 -
Was the gun new or used?? 0 -
He bought it used from a dealer 0 -
17's of any bore and stroke are notorious for fouling. Unless the bbl is thoroughly cleaned I would not expect to see good accuracy. I've never
used a cooper bbl,so i can't attest to their quality...so you might consider that as well.0 -
A barrel can be ruined from over, or aggressive (rod damage etc.) cleaning. 0 -
I really can't believe 2k will shoot out a 17 barrel?[?] 0
