Below in red, is info from Browning web site.

"1903-1939 First 10,000 shipped to U.S. Marked with "BROWNING AUTOMATIC ARMS CO. OGDEN UTAH-U.S.A." Very few serial number records remain. Beginning with Serial Number 1 to approximately 228,000. Exact production figures are not available. Year of manufacture on Pre-World War II production is strictly a guess."

Don't think that would be a sweet 16, just a standard?

The serial number on your Auto-5 is X29450, which identifies it as a 1949 production Sweet Sixteen. Production of the Sweet Sixteen began in 1937.

The information quoted by rufe-snow on the Browning website is not accurate, as a substantial number of the production records do exist in Belgium. Those records were extensively researched and studied by two fellows who then wrote what I refer to as the "bible" for Auto-5 collectors.

No guesswork needed! As I previously mentioned, it is a 1949 production Sweet Sixteen. What I forgot to mention, is that it should not have a "suicide" (pre-WW II) safety.

006_zpsoljqaqzf.jpg got pictures up now just to verify what i have.. thanks Bert, that guess comment was a tad of sarcasm to the one that suggested it was a standard not a sweet 16...there are several FN stamps on it plus MADE IN BELGIUM is on the side of the barrel

Bert, you say it SHOULD NOT have the suicide safety? it does have it-see picture- with S/N 29450 clearly stamped..... something isn't jiving here.

FN did not resume production of the Auto-5 post war until sometime in the latter part of the year 1948. It is possible that there were some pre-war receivers and parts still on hand that were used in the early post-war production guns. That is certainly a possibility on your Sweet Sixteen A-5.
