Detonics MkI
I have a Seattle made Detonics MkI that I bought used in about 1980, one of 3 Detonics I own. Wondering if anyone can provide info on DOM and how original it is.
Serial # is I50XX. The hammer looks like a Commander style with the lower half of the round cocking piece clipped - I think it's called a "J" hammer. The barrel hood is stamped "Colt .45 Auto. N.M" on top line and under reads "MK.IV / SERIES '70". The barrel itself is obviously sleeved to a "bull barrel" configuration and of course there's no barrel bushing. Left side of the polished slide reads "DETONICS .45" with "PAT.PEND." and above the serial number on frame right side is "Detonics Assoc. SEATTLE, WA."
I'm wondering how original the gun is, the two piece barrel would seem to originally be a Colt manufacture cut down & sleeved - true? Is the gun at all unusual? I've no intention of selling the thing, but see the value of these things has gone up a bit since I paid all of $125.00 for it 35 years back.

most guns that have had parts replaced without knowing it was done by a well respected Pistol smith will LOSE much of its value over a stock pistol as it came from the factory. value is How MUCH you like it To you & you alone 0 -

True. I don't know that any parts on this pistol have been replaced. Have had it since about 1980, maybe sooner & I haven't replaced anything. My supposition (or wondering) is that early on Detonics made their guns by buying Colt barrels, then cutting and fitting a sleeve. I know there was a certain amount of variety and "cobbling together" by the factory back then.0 -
True that Combat Masters originally had cut down and sleeved Colt barrels.
With your pistol being such an early specimen it's possible that it also has a cut down Colt frame. They later went to Essex produced frames.0 -

The gun in this video is the same as mine & fairly close in serial number, but I don't see "Colt" stamps on the barrel hood and it looks like the muzzle has been differently crowned. The video references early pistols using Colt frames. As an aside, I had no idea the company name comes from the founders early association with an explosives company.
