Whitworth Sights
Hello All,
What does a set of original Whitworth sights go for? The front ramp and a flat bottom, three leaf express, 1, 2 and 3 hundred yard rear sight. Both in new condition in the factory box. Can't seem to find much info online. Thank you.

Okay, let me rephrase that. I picked up a set of sights. Can anyone tell me what they're worth? I'd like know if I was taken. 0 -
What did you pay? Have you looked at what a Lyman 48 can go for used these days. The last NIB rear peep Lyman for a model 12 Remington went for +$250.
added Not a lot of call for Express sights or rifles here abouts these days. Making them would cost more than $50 in machine time. I almost bought on of those Mauser's in 458 Win mag. Way too heavy to pack around IMHO.0 -
Nick Strobel, in "Old Gunsights". Has reproduction adds, for 2 different folding leaf express sights. One by Mauser the other by Winchester. He prices them at between $50 & $300, but his book is 18 years old. The values might have appreciated substantially?
Are you sure that they are original? The original Whitworth rifles date to the 19th Century. They were muzzle loaders, some were used during our civil war. Pictures that I have seen have shown rifleman laying on their backs. With a adjustable peep sight attached to the rear portion of the stock.
Folding leaf express type sights. Seem to have been for high velocity smokeless type cartridges. Used at much shorter distances, than the Black Powder Whitworth rifles.
EDIT #1
Whitworth African Express Rifle, with express sights. Were imported and sold by interarms, from the 1970's. If these are the sights you have? There not old and not rare, or valuable, IMHO.
EDIT #2,
Got the following off the net.
"The guns, (Whitworth Mausers), are based on Yugo commercial Mausers, ( Zavasta arsenal/factory), and barrels. They were then assembled into complete rifles, in England."0 -
IF THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE, SARCO WAS SELLING THEM FOR ABOUT $35 JUST A FEW YEARS AGO. I STILL HAVE A SET OR TWO. YOU NEED A 'BASE' FOR THE REAR SIGHT, THEY CAME IN SEVERAL STILES.
EDIT; THIS IS WHAT SARCO HAS

By original I meant they're actual Whitworth sights in a plastic factory box obviously not made in the 1800's. The enclosed card says, African Safari Express Series, Model "M" Express Sights, Flat Base VAT80301. And includes a front sight ramp. Looking at Sarco's website, it matches their MK10 Mauser 3 Folding Leaves Express Sight listing. Out of Stock for $50. Who makes those sights for them? Since they're factory parts, I was hoping they'd be worth more. 0 -
I bought the three leaf express site for the Whitworth 458 of mine and I think I paid $49 or $59. I can't remember for sure. I don't remember who I got them from but I think it was an advertisement in Shotgun News. 0 -
Thank you for the help. 0
