will a p17 bolt work in a p14 this is a custom build on a p 14 action that i am thinking of

  I do believe that they are interchangeable.

  Maybe not. 303 British is a rimmed cartridge. 30-06 is a semirimmed cartridge.

  I think so, based on it is the same design. But, the bolt face and extractor positioning are different for the two different cartridge heads. Sorry, I don't have time to check them; getting ready for hunting.

  The 17 is a longer action, doubt it will work.

  "The 17 is a longer action, doubt it will work."............with the exception of the feed rails the actions are identical. the 'complete' bolts will work in either action, the extractors and fireing pins are slightly different. you can use a 'm-1917' bolt in a 'p-14' action for a rimless conversion, you can also use a p-14 bolt in a m-1917 action for a belted magnum (or the larger ultra mags.)conversion.
