.243
Who makes the better bolt rifle? Savage or Ruger and which model do you feel is the best in .243 caliber? Using it for coyote.[?]

What is the best load for the .243 with a 100 gr. bullet. Thanks 0 -
Ruger Hawk Eye std blued model wood stock, or the compact in stainless laminated stock
Either of these if looking for new.
Savage is a good rifle , but I think Ruger is better all around.
There are some real nice used Ruger 77's on the auction side in 243 at half what new are going for.
I have a 77 varmint in 6mm Rem that is a great rifle, a tack driver. it's about 35 years old,and to me is better then todays offerings .0 -
Thank you for the info. Can I ask why you feel the Ruger is the better of the two? Is it quality or a more accurate or what?quote:Originally posted by TANK78Z

The Ruger American, and the Savage Axis are clearly on the same playing field, although the Ruger has the better trigger of the two...even if it was copied from Savage.
If you want out of the box best for the lowest price, those two are it. If you want a bit better at a little taller price, it is hard to beat the Tikka T-3. It is one of the most accurate, ergonomic, and user friendly rifles, right out of the box.

There are a bunch of decent rifles in .243, almost every manufacturer makes one.
I'd say go hold a bunch and see what fits your body (and wallet) the best. You probably won't be able to test fire them, but at least you'll know how it feels in your hands.
I like Rugers, they last forever and always seem to work. My .243 is a 77 RSI (full stock), I bought it for hiking about in deer country because it's handy.
Savage is known for accurate guns that don't break the bank, so you should be good with one of their products as well.
Have fun shopping!0 -

Of the two my preference is the Savage, Model 14 American, but I'd prefer the 250 Sav to the 243 Win. 0 -
The 25-45 sharps caliber my be worth looking at Its on the ar platform.
87 grain bullet at 3000 fps.0 -
To me the Savage rifle look and feel poorly made, however they have a well earned reputation for accuracy, the .17 I own will put holes in a dime at 50 yards. My .243 is a Ruger 77, and I would do it again without hesitation. 0 -
Ray B has given you very good advice. I would like to have a model 14AC in 250 savage myself. The 243 is an excellent varmint round that can double as a deer caliber with the heavier bullets. The Savage will generally be more accurate than any other off the shelf rifle. 0 -
