EtronX firing??
I understand the Remington EtronX rifles fired the ammunition with an electric charge rather than a mechanical firing pin. My question is: do these guns require the special EtronX primers, or will they fire regular factory ammunition?

C&P on the Etronx
Here's how the Model 700 EtronX works: The electronic fire control has no moving parts other than the trigger. No sear to be released. No firing pin to strike the primer. Instead, an internal electrical circuit sends a charge through the system to our electrically responsive primer. Closing the bolt on the cartridge establishes contact between the firing pin and the primer. When the trigger is pulled, the electronic circuit sends an electrical pulse through the firing pin directly to the primer. This all happens in less than the blink of an eye. Ignition is even faster, with near zero lock time (.0000027 seconds, actually), which virtually eliminates the effects of barrel movement after pulling the trigger. In fact, the bullet exits the barrel of the Model 700 EtronX before a mechanical firing pin could even hit the primer in a conventional rifle. The system also creates an exceptionally crisp trigger pull with 36% less travel than standard triggers.0 -
They require the special EtroniX primer's. From what I understand, the rifles themselves are not convertible to a standard ignition system, either.
EDIT 1
The ignition system of this rifle, is basically a CDI(Capacitor Discharge Ignition) system, where the trigger is nothing but a micro switch, that when activated completes the circuit, sending a pulse to the primer, that is most likely several thousand volts, backed up by a several hundred milliamp current. Pretty much like a diminutive version of a blasting cap. Voltage is not current...it is the potential, of which to create a current.0 -
Primers are available, but expensive.

Is there a explosive in the primer or does it send a spark to the powder, wouldn't think it would require a hasmat charge in shipping[?] 0 -
As I understand it, the Etronx primer has priming compound, just made for electrical ignition instead of percussion.
Brass and powder are standard.
Trivia: There was the Kricotronic of the 1980s, which put a high amperage discharge through the rim of a standard .22 LR.
There have been all sorts of electric trigger guns but they are just using a solenoid to release a sear on a regular striker for standard ammo.0 -
There is an explosive in the primer, detonated by a 150 volt current. Since primers can "mass detonate", there is a $28 HAZMAT shipping fee added on to those. Like any primer.
There have been other attempts at electronic (not electrical) priming. Thee was a shotgun that used a system called (IIRC) Electro-Prime, and there was the Voere VEC-91, using a caseless electronically primed cartridge.
There were some muzzleloaders that used ELECTRIC ignition- basically a filament that gets hot when current flows- but they did not have the INCREDIBLE lock time of the electronics. And some that used an electric switch and a solenoid to drive a conventional firing pin to strike a conventional primer.0 -
Electric firing SAA is an old concept. Our own U.S. military has been experimenting with it since WW2.
And, of course, electric firing artillery has been around even longer.0
