I was a little confused because I thought the year came first.

  For a while, during and after W W II. Remington used 2 letters to represent the year of manufacture. The first letter always remained, as the month of manufacture.

  Nope. There is no month using letter S. Months are B L A C K P O W D E R X. July 1947. Nice C&R rifle.
