I just checked my -3 a 10 5/8 Silhouette and 2.082 is what I show on the dial caliper to the estimated center of the screw head. I think you need to get the proper height blade also, they have several different ones.

Is the top strap cut for a round or square front sight base [?]
    This 29-5 looks square.

The 29-5 was introduced in 1990.

A long recognized issue with 29's was the bolt having a tendency to from jump out of the cylinder notches under recoil when shooting heavy loads. This was fixed on the -5 by a larger bolt and notches.

Any square front sight will work, just find the correct blade height.
    I think it's a .146 [;)]

Well, no it won't. I measured the distance from the shoulder to screw on my model 14, it is 1.852", with a square front.

The model 29 is 2.082" for the same measurement.

    This is my problem.

I checked my Model 53 a K frame and 1.852 is about right.
