Smith & Wesson 29-5 Rear Sight??
My 29-5 is NOT a Classic,DX Classic, Silhouette, Magna Classic, or any other of the variations that the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson seems to state that all 29-5's must be. In fact, according to that book, they don't even show when or why the "-5" came to be, they skip from -4 to -6.
It's a standard style with an 8-3/8" barrel.
Missing rear sight. I ordered one from Brownells for a -5 and the screw hole didn't line up. Their tech line was no help.
My gun has the screw hole located 2.082" from the milled shoulder. Can somebody measure some other N frame guns and tell me another model that will fit? I'm getting nowhere with 29-5.
Gun came as a special gift from a childhood friend that died of Leukemia. It means a lot to me to be able to take it to the range someday.
Thanks!

I just checked my -3 a 10 5/8 Silhouette and 2.082 is what I show on the dial caliper to the estimated center of the screw head. I think you need to get the proper height blade also, they have several different ones. 0 -
Is the top strap cut for a round or square front sight base [?]
This 29-5 looks square.

The 29-5 was introduced in 1990.
A long recognized issue with 29's was the bolt having a tendency to from jump out of the cylinder notches under recoil when shooting heavy loads. This was fixed on the -5 by a larger bolt and notches.0 -

Any square front sight will work, just find the correct blade height.
I think it's a .146 [;)]0 -

Well, no it won't. I measured the distance from the shoulder to screw on my model 14, it is 1.852", with a square front.
The model 29 is 2.082" for the same measurement.
This is my problem.0 -
I checked my Model 53 a K frame and 1.852 is about right. 0
