When and why did they make 12 gauge in 2 5/8".

I think the switch started in the late 1800's about the the same time as the transformation from black powder to smokeless the 1893 Winchester had 2 5/8 chambers and the 1897 The frame was strengthened and made longer to handle a 12 gauge 2"?-inch shell, and smokeless powder as well as the 2"y-inch shell

I think the evolution came about from advancements in the knowledge on the advantage of different WADs to improve patterning ' and also haveing room for all wads and larger amounts of SHOT we are still doing the same wit 3& 1/2 inch 12 Ga. 0 -
I come across a lot of odd ammunition and have only encountered two boxes marked 2 5/8. One western Xpert and one Remington Sure Shot. Both from the 1940s. I know the Europeans use shorter rounds than we do but had never heard of US made and didn't know that we had chambered guns for them. 0
