1897 Winchester 12 GA
I am no shot Gun person so I need a little help. Have a guy wanting to sell me a 1897 12 Ga 30 inch barrel built in 1940. It is a takedown model and has a 18 inch barrel that comes with it which is complete. Take one out put the other on in. The only information I can find show a short barrel for the 97 but it is a 20 inch. Would anybody know if they made a 18 inch or has this one just been cut off. All I have is the information right now no pictures, they are on there way

The 30 inch full choke barren serial numbers did match. The 18 did not. The magazine on the 18 appeared to have been welded. I did not see that at first. I guess the cut the magazine down to match the barrel. I normally collect Winchester levers but every now and then i get a offer on something I know nothing about. I know that from time to time Winchester would do something special but the only information I could develop on the 97 told me the 20 inch short barrel was as short a barrel that was produced.
Thank you, you saved me some money. Seems like there is always somebody out there wanting to give me another lesson on buying guns.0 -
How much is he asking for the gun? It might still be a good buy without the cutdown non-original barrel assembly. 0 -
$ 650 0 -
just to note; you cann't swap barrels on a m-97 like you can on,say, a rem. 870. the m-97 has a 'chamber ring' (like a m-12) that must be matched with the particular barrel in question. if both barrels match the chamber ring=no problem. $650 is a bit 'steep' unless the parent shotgun is like new. 0 -
It is well short of like new. Since the short barrel was cut down, but fits, I think I will leave this one alone. Was thinking of a home protection gun but I got a old 37 loaded with 00 that should take care of most problems. 0
