1894 Winchester feeding problem
I recently purchased a 94 Win. made in 1903. It's a neat rifle, 26 oct bbl with double set triggers, in 38-55. My problem is it won't feed from the mag. the round drops down before it can go into the chamber. The bolt hits the round about half way up the case. Is there supposed to be a spring in there somewhere. I took it completely and cleaned and inspected all parts and they seemed to be in good shape.
Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Sounds like a special order rifle and you need to be very careful not to cause any damage to screw heads and such. Fitted screwdriver bits are a must.
I'd be looking at the carrier spring if it has one. Will it feed if you pull up on the carrier with a stiff piece of wire from the side? Search for a good schematic of the early model 1894.
My 94 AE is in pieces waiting for me to weld it up.

A previous owner already marked the receiver up for me. Not terrible, but scratches at each screw on the receiver. The gun is an even patina with no pitting, with good wood for its age. It was put together wrong when I bought it, and the lever would not operate without a great deal of effort. The bore is pretty rough, and I have been working on it for a month or so with no great improvement.
I will try to find a good schematic of it. There was no spring in when I took it apart.0 -
I need a carrier spring. Gunparts is sold out of them. Anyone know where I might get one ? 0 -
Found one on Ebay. Hope this will fix my problem. 0 -
on the 'working' end of the carrier spring is a 'triangle' shaped 'bump', the top of this should be a sharp edge, if is 'rounded' from wear it will give you problems 0 -
I will check it when it gets in. Thanks 0 -
Just to let everyone that helped on this project, I got it working. The lifter had been bent in on one of the legs, and even though I had straightened it, I did not get it perfect, and apparently it needs to be very nearly so. I got it out today and spent an hour on getting it just as close to straight as possible. It worked. It felt good to see it feed those big old rounds into the chamber.
Now the bore is another matter.....0
