Self Defense Ammo
Can anybody reccommend a self defense ammo that will feed properly through my Kel-Tec .380?

Would like an opinion on how the FTX and Hydrashocks compare as the best round in .380 or 9mm for CCW. Thanks 0 -
Both are excellent defense ammo. You sshould try both to make sure they function in your gun above anything else. I carry Hornady Critical Defense & Duty with that FTX bullet in .380, .357SIG, .38 Special and .45acp. More than enough penetration in all of them. 0 -
+1 for which ever runs 100% in your pistols. Take the time and shoot enough of them at different ranges to learn their trajectory and POI if you shoot other cheaper ammo for training. I generally only shoot 1 load in firearms once I find what they like. 0 -
Luckygunner just did some tests on self defense ammo. I would use it for comparison information only. 0 -

If you are running a top tier 9mm and can find any, the Federal 124 grain Hydrashok +p+ gives almost 1300fps out of my P-35's and is 100% reliable feed, fire, eject. 0 -
You'll hear a million opinions on this.
In **MY** opinion, any two cartridges firing similar weight similar design bullets at similar velocities are going to perform identically. Any difference between them is going to be mostly marketing hype not physical reality.
IE, any two similar types of "premium" 9mm+P defense ammo by big name makers (including 115 grain FTX Hornady and 115gr Federal Hydrashok) are going to offer effectively indistinguishable terminal ballistics. With either one, if you put the bullet in the right place, you'll get results, and if you don't, you won't (and it won't be the bullet's fault).
So to answer your question, pick whichever one runs your gun 100%. Assuming both do (and honestly, both should run *ANY* modern service gun 100%. . .so I'd be pretty surprised to hear that either one did NOT), pick whichever one costs less and/or is more readily available to you.
Personally, I'd be more than satisifed with either one.0
